Comment on The Future of Mobile Tagging by Jason Chan

Hi Elliott,

Nice meeting you and thanks for commenting. Mobile tagging seems to be gaining traction I like this report as it does a pretty good job covering a wide variety of applications. As a survey of what's out there and who's doing what I think it's great. I'd like to see more thought in terms of what happens with the data after the scan. It seems like the feedback loop ends on the consumer's handset and unless the data gets sent back to the advertiser, the record of that interaction is lost. I'd also like to have some metrics around how successful some of these programs are. Unless you can measure the performance of a channel, it's hard to say how successful it is.

Having said that, we have clients asking about QR codes from time to time, mostly CPG contexts. For those applications, I feel that infogathering or digital couponing works because there's an immediate payoff for the user. This would work well in retail environments. I think is potential for QR codes in environments, to create scavenger hunts or riddles that make it more game-like in nature. I also like it for accessing special/enhanced content like behind-the-scenes info - great for films/TV.

Happy to chat further and where you see things going. Feel free to drop me a line here or via email.
